Citi fired her after she raised Trump client concerns, suit says

Citigroup allegedly tried to open a secret account for Donald Trump. A senior executive flagged the risks. Days later, according to a lawsuit filed in Brooklyn federal court, she was fired.

The complaint, filed Monday under the pseudonym Jane Doe, says the former managing director at Citi's wealth division was pushed out through a "sham" human resources investigation after she raised concerns she believed violated federal securities laws and misled shareholders. The Financial Times first reported that the client at the center of the dispute was Trump, citing people familiar with the matter. Reuters could not independently confirm that detail.

What she says she found

The lawsuit describes concerns across four areas: risk management, anti-money laundering controls, reputational risk, and data compliance. At least some of those concerns were raised, the suit says, while Citi was considering whether to open a numbered account for the client in question.

A numbered account is an account structured to conceal the client's identity from most of the bank's own employees, making routine monitoring difficult. Banks use them for high-net-worth clients, but they are subject to strict regulatory scrutiny precisely because they can frustrate the kind of internal oversight that anti-money laundering rules require.

The former executive's position, as described in the lawsuit, was that the process for taking on this particular client was deficient in ways that posed legal and regulatory risk. Shortly after she raised those concerns internally, she was out of a job.

Citi denied the allegations entirely. "This lawsuit has absolutely zero merit," the bank said in a statement. Citi also filed a separate legal challenge Tuesday, arguing that the former executive does not meet the legal requirements to proceed anonymously. The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Why this matters beyond one person's case

The details of the suit are still largely hidden behind redactions, and the underlying facts are contested. But the structure of the allegation carries weight regardless of how it resolves in court.

Banks are among the most regulated institutions in American life. The entire framework of anti-money laundering compliance, built up over decades after a string of financial scandals, rests on the idea that internal watchdogs can flag risks without fearing retaliation. When someone inside a bank raises a concern under that framework, federal law is supposed to protect them. The allegation here is that it didn't.

The Trump dimension adds a specific layer of institutional pressure. Banks have spent the past year recalibrating their relationships with Washington as Trump returned to power. Major financial firms have donated to his inauguration fund, scaled back diversity programs, and in some cases sought to rebuild relationships with his administration and his business interests. That context does not prove wrongdoing. But it does describe an environment where the incentive to accommodate a politically connected prospective client could run directly against the judgment of a compliance officer whose job is to say no.

If the numbered-account allegation is accurate, it would mean Citi was designing a structure that would have made the president of the United States invisible to most of the bank's own monitoring systems at a moment when doing business with Trump's family carries its own category of regulatory and reputational complexity.

The case will now turn on whether Jane Doe can proceed anonymously, and then on the merits hidden behind those redactions. Whistleblower retaliation cases are hard to win. But the complaint, even in its heavily blacked-out form, describes a compliance function under stress. And the system only works if the people inside it believe they can speak up.
